The Playground Classroom
On the playground, we see the NPS Mission and Core Values of Love, Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Safety at work (and play!).
The centerpiece of the playground is inspired by the School's mascot, Spirit the Cardinal, and speaks to the school’s mission - to “launch” children from the “nest” of NPS and the Decade of Childhood to the next phase of their lives.
The Upper Playground adjacent to the turf field offers a basketball court, providing a great space for both casual games and practice.
The Towers offer tiered climbing levels with tall slides, as well as various climbing and balance extensions around the main structure.
This new playground provides a wonderful new space for our students to explore and challenge themselves through new and different play choices. Robin Westerberg, 3rd Grade Teacher & Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees
The Walholla offers new and exciting climbing experiences with its maze-like vertical and horizontal paths. It serves as a spot for children to take a break from active play, socialize, or engage in imaginative play.
This octagonal-shaped, enclosed space is used for the popular game of Gaga, a fast-paced variant of dodgeball. Players try to avoid being hit by a soft ball while attempting to hit others below the knees. At the center of the pit is a painted image of the NPS mascot, 'Spirit' the Cardinal, adding school spirit to the game. The pit encourages active play, teamwork, and friendly competition, making it a favorite spot for students.
The Cardinal Clubhouse offers a climbing tower and slide for younger students and also offers a working telescope on the top level and play area underneath.
The intentional and thoughtful design incorporates extensive input from NPS teachers at all grade levels - professionals with keen knowledge of how children utilize playgrounds, as well as what equipment and forms of play spark learning and joy.Malcolm Lester, Head of School
This versatile play area, designed for creative fun, provides children with a space to dig, build, and explore their imagination. Whether they’re constructing elaborate sandcastles, playing with toy shovels and buckets, or simply enjoying the tactile experience of the sand, the sandbox offers endless opportunities for hands-on play and outdoor fun.
As the spinner rotates, children experience the sensation of speed and centrifugal force, helping them develop balance and coordination. The spinner encourages active play, cooperation, and outdoor fun, making it a favorite addition to our playground.
Swings are a classic and much-loved playground feature. The motion of swinging offers a sense of freedom and excitement, as well as helping to develop balance, coordination, and strength.
