For an additional fee, campers ages 4 and up may be enrolled in instructional swimming as part of our Summer Horizons Day Camp program. Swimming is not offered during Camp Invention or Specialty camps.
Swimmers walk with SHC staff members to American University’s pool for lessons. Swim lessons will be provided by Nation's Capital Swim School instructors, who will give 30-minute swimming instruction and supervision to small groups of campers. There will be at least one certified life guard on deck supervising lessons at all times. Each age group will have designated swim days built into their camp schedule.
This summer, we will swim in 4 timeslots between 9:00 - 11:00 am. Swimmers in Bluebirds & Larks will swim 3 times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). Robins, Hawks, and Eagles will swim 4 times a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday).
For safety reasons, campers are tested on their first day of swimming and are divided into groups based on age and swimming ability. However, campers are not required to have any formal swim lessons and/or testing prior to attending camp, and all swim levels are welcome. The SHC staff remains on the pool deck during the lessons.
At the end of each week, parents of Bluebirds & Larks receive a short progress report.
Campers not enrolled in swimming take part in a variety of AM Adventures activities designed to complement the rest of the program, including time for optional water play.
