Instructional Swimming

PLEASE NOTE: We are in the process of confirming our swimming protocol for summer 2022. We will follow guidelines and protocol set forth by our swim company, Nation's Capital Swimming, Inc., and American University, which may differ slightly from our standard requirements for participation. Thank you for your patience as we finalize those plans.

For an additional fee, campers ages 4 and up may be enrolled in instructional swimming as part of our Summer Horizons Day Camp program. Swimming is not offered during Camp Invention or Specialty camps.

Swimmers walk with SHC staff members to American University’s pool for lessons. Swim lessons will be provided by certified lifeguards of Nation's Capital Swim School, who will give 30-minute swimming instruction and supervision to small groups of campers. Each age group will have designated swim days built into their camp schedule.

In 2022, we will swim in 4 timeslots between 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Swimmers in Bluebirds & Larks will swim 3 times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). Robins, Hawks, and Eagles will swim 4 times a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday).

For safety reasons, campers are tested on their first day of swimming and are divided into groups based on age and swimming ability. However, campers are not required to have any formal swim lessons and/or testing prior to attending camp, and all swim levels are welcome. The SHC staff remains on the pool deck during the lessons.

At the end of each week, parents of Bluebirds & Larks receive a short progress report.

Campers not enrolled in swimming take part in a variety of AM Adventures activities designed to complement the rest of the program, including time for optional water play.
