Children ages 4 and up are encouraged to register for instructional swimming as part of our Summer Horizons Day Camp Program. (Swimming is not offered during specialty camp weeks.)
Swimmers walk with Summer Horizons staff members to American University’s pool for lessons. Swim lessons will be provided by certified lifeguards of Nation's Capital Swimming, Inc., who will give 30-minute swimming instruction and supervision to small groups of campers. Robins and Hawks swim Monday through Thursday, while Bluebirds swim Tuesday through Thursday. For safety reasons, campers are tested on their first day of swimming and are divided into groups based on age and swimming ability. However, campers are not required to have any formal swim lessons and/or testing prior to attending camp, and all swim levels are welcome. The SHC staff remains on the pool deck during the lessons. Each Thursday, parents of Bluebirds & Larks receive a short summary of the week in a progress report.
Campers not signed up for swimming take part in a variety of AM Adventures activities designed to complement the rest of the program and may include water play.
