In Math, the third graders have started a simulation of working in a T-shirt factory.
In their new roles as employees of this factory, the students must keep track of their inventory before and after shipping orders, as boxes and rolls in the warehouse are opened so that orders can be filled. They’ve organized their inventory by packing rolls of T-shirts (ten to a roll) in storage boxes that hold ten rolls and calculated the income from sales of T-shirts at $10 each.
This practice not only deepens their understanding of place value, but also introduces them to the skill of regrouping for two- and three-digit computation. Working together in groups of three or four, the students have had the chance to build their skills in collaboration and cooperation, as they are each responsible for checking one another’s calculations.
