Board Game Design Demonstrates Students' Learning

In Fifth Grade reading, students read Maroo of The Winter Caves by Ann Turnbull, an Ice Age survival story about a girl who leads her family to their tribe's winter camp.

As a final project, students created their own board games which depicted many of the struggles Maroo faced in the story. Through chance cards and luck of the dice, students tried to reach the game board's winter camp.

This extension activity serves to deepen students' understanding of character motives, literary themes, and story structure. And it's a lot of fun!

Students enjoyed playing these games with their classmates and First Grade buddies. The games are on display in the hall - come check them out!
