The students began this process by participating in a Design Thinking Routine. Students viewed and discussed the painting A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by the French artist Georges Seurat. This painting is unique due to its use of small points of paint and scientific use of color theory.
Class time was spent outside so that students could look at, touch, and draw trees from life. They began by sketching trees outside, noticing the structure of trees and identifying how colors change due to the effects of sunlight. Additionally, the students discussed the natural causes for the changes in leaf color during the autumn season.
Students began painting the trees in a pointillist style using a variety of paint colors and Q-tips to apply the paint, focusing on points of color and visual color mixing.
