Ways to Give to NPS
While most contributions to NPS are made in the form of cash or checks, there are other means of supporting the School. Below please find a list of the types of gifts NPS accepts:
Cash and Checks
Cash and checks are the most cost-effective form of giving to the School, as no transaction fees are deducted from your gift. Cash and check contributions are deductible in the year that they are received by the Development office or, if mailed, in the year of the postmark (i.e., on or before 12/31 of that year).
Credit Card
Gifts by credit card – VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express – are convenient and easily made online. They are tax deductible in the year of the transaction. To make an online credit card contribution or payment, please click ‘Donate Online.’ You may also provide your credit card information on the phone or in writing to the Development Office.
Charitable Gift Trusts
Some families have Charitable Trusts established in their family name and/or may be actively involved in a Charitable Trust. Contributions to all fundraising efforts at NPS may be made through such Charitable Trusts.
Securities
A gift of publicly traded securities is another convenient means of supporting the School. Donors may deduct the full fair-market value of long-term appreciated securities in the year of the transaction. You must contact the Office of Development (202.537.7559 or via e-mail) before you make a gift of securities to record details of the transaction that later enable our office to match donors to the received securities. When you contact our office, we will provide you with the transfer instructions your broker will need.
Matching Gifts
Whether a gift is made in cash, with a credit card, or via the transfer of securities, many corporations match charitable gifts, possibly doubling or tripling the value of a gift to NPS. Companies like Fannie Mae, T. Rowe Price, New York Life, Oracle, Deutsche Bank, Microsoft, the GE Foundation, and The Washington Post have matched gifts to NPS. The most effective way to find out whether your employer matches gifts is to contact your HR department. Most of the time this information will only be given out to the employee. The Development Office will handle the submission of the details to the company matching program once we receive your employer’s form or website for matching information.
In-Kind Gifts
In-kind gifts apply most commonly to fundraising for the Auction. It includes any gifts to be auctioned during the Annual Auction and Gala, but may also include items as classroom supplies, athletic equipment, computers, landscape material, and many other items related to the educational program. The gift value is determined by the donor through appraisal or record of purchase. In-kind donations to the Annual Giving Campaign are rare and must be approved by the Office of Development. Similarly, donations of ‘gently used’ gifts must be approved by the Office of Development prior to acceptance. In-kind gifts qualify for a tax deduction equal to the value – appraised or determined by the donor – as permitted by the law.
Planned Gifts
A planned gift is a gift that is arranged now and fulfilled later. Planned giving combines financial benefits to the Donor along with a charitable gift to the School and helps ensure the education for future generations of NPS students. The National Presbyterian Church Fund for Charitable Giving is one service available to NPS donors who wish to consider a planned gift to the School. Please contact the Director of Development or the Head of School for assistance with planned gifts like Bequests, Retirement Funds, Life Insurance Policies, and Charitable Remainder Trusts.
The information provided here is general in nature. A donor should consult the Office of Development, his or her attorney, accountant, or tax advisor for more specific information and assistance with these or other giving opportunities, including personal properties.
