Counselor-in-Training Program (CIT)

The goal of the Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program at Summer Horizons Camp is to provide interested adolescents with an opportunity to develop leadership skills in a comfortable atmosphere under the supervision of a dedicated CIT Coordinator. The program is designed to give students entering seventh through ninth grades a base of understanding about youth, leadership, health and safety, and program planning.

Led by the CIT Coordinator, CITs work as a team, in small groups, and individually to learn about aspects of working with young children in a day camp environment. CITs are also provided with opportunities to plan activities and practice teaching skills while interacting directly with younger campers under the supervision of a Head Teacher. Regular goal setting, assessment, and evaluation are also essential components throughout the program.

CITs work for two weeks during our nine week program. These weeks may be nonconsecutive, but a commitment regarding the specific weeks is required upon registration. Please note that there are only a few CIT spots available per week. Hours are from 8:30-3:30 each day and CITs must be available for a full day’s work every day of their two week assignment.

CIT Application Process

Only a select number of applicants will be chosen to participate in the program. The selection process includes the submission of an application form and personal statement completed by the applicant and an on-site personal interview with the Camp Director. Applications for the first round of selections are due no later than April 21, 2008. Interviews will be scheduled upon receipt of applications. Selections will be made on or before May 16, 2008 and all applicants will be notified in writing. If space remains in the program after May 16th, additional applications will be considered. There is a $50.00 non-refundable application fee.
