4th Grade Visits National Portrait Gallery

The fourth graders traveled to the National Portrait Gallery to participate in a program entitled "Shaping America." The students studied portraits of Americans who made significant contributions to our society from the colonial times through the Civil War. Some types of individuals they encountered included inventors, presidents, reformers, authors, and soldiers.

Looking through an art history lens, the students examined each portrait, such as this one of Frederick Douglass, focusing on posture, setting, physical features, facial expressions and other depicted items to predict and learn more about these key historical figures.
